I think this is my favorite self portrait I've ever taken. Though I wonder what it would look like with my fisheye lens.
Guess I'll have to find out tomorrow. :)

I have arrived in Taos, New Mexico, rather far above Taos, actually, and am firmly ensconced in the Snow Bear Lodge with the rest of the Rio Hondo writing workshop. I have a lovely room all to myself in which to work, a fabulous multi-head (is there anything which could not be improved by the addition of "multi-head") shower, and wonderful, brilliant people. I feel remarkably peaceful and ready to have my work torn up and to make more in this not-very-little room.
Which came with its very own faceless stone neolithic Bear statue on the writing desk. I take this as an excellent omen, and I have named him Augustine, and he has assured me that he can help me with structure.
I also have Reliable Internet Access, and so vow to post frequently. If my car-conversation with ![[info]](http://p-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) bram452 on the way up is any indication, this will be a fascinating week, and like the dork I am, I can't wait to learn! It's like the first day of school, only without math.
It is beautiful here, to say the least. The mountains remind me of the Sierras, and all the trips we used to take to Boreal and Strawberry Valley when I was a wee one. It's not exactly the same climate, but the smells are similar, and the feel of sitting on the roof of the world. There is still snow on the ground, and it is quite cold. Nevertheless, I'm already going barefoot. I am a more comfortable human without shoes.
When I landed in Jamaica, I felt absurdly like Johnny 5 in Short Circuit: all my dishes and antennae out, eager for input. Same thing here, but with brisk winds and mountain stars instead of hibiscus and turquoise water. But it makes me prickle and thrill and feel alive.
I'm so glad I came.

11th May, 2008. 2:10 pm. what i did this weekend.
well, i'm still a tad bit sore from helping my parents this weekend. i went up north friday and came back south yesterday in time for dinner. i suppose it was a bit of a waste, since amazingly enough, we only got one raised bed built. the problem was that we were using rail road ties, which besides being 8 feet long and heavy, weren't of uniform size. which makes it hard to get them lined up, besides trying to get them level. so a long day of moving them a lot, drilling holes, and pounding rebar into them to keep them in place later, we had to go out there the next day and pry one end apart since my brother and i got it crooked. which happened after my parents left to their bee meeting, leaving us to finish. and i'm not the most handy man capable person out there.
it is pretty funny though, my mom now has 2 bee hives in our yard. since all the bees inside are female (oh, and amazingly enough, exact clones of the queen) my mom refers to them as "her girls." it's actually pretty cool i think, though i don't think my mom should keep getting into these project, that just suck up all her free time. which she never has, since she's always rushing around doing something.
i just realized this weekend that i'll be up in cda three times this month, almost more than i have all year. a lot of driving, but i'll be going back there next weekend for my brother's graduation.
Current mood: fine.
